Comprehensive Breastfeeding Training for Professionals: Enhancing Skills and Knowledge

Breastfeeding For Professionals

As a healthcare provider, I understand the profound impact breastfeeding has on the well-being of both mothers and infants. Comprehensive breastfeeding training for professionals is essential in equipping us with the necessary skills and knowledge to provide optimal support and guidance to breastfeeding families. In this article, I will delve into the importance of such training, explore its key components, and highlight valuable resources to enhance our expertise in this critical area.

I’d love to start by highlighting that in the first 5 years of my career as a paediatric nurse in the NHS, I gave breastfeeding support and advice to many parents. Despite having only one half-day on infant feeding during the entirety of my degree, I was expected to support families with feeding their baby. Not only that, the trusts in which I worked at the time (the early 2000s) didn’t offer a single infant feeding course, study day or qualification. We didn’t have infant feeding leads in the Paeds department - they worked only in midwifery. However, if we were desperate, and labour ward was quiet, we could sometimes beg and a midwife would come and help us. As you can imagine, as a nurse who had never breastfed herself, I gave information based on assumptions, and small snippets of things that I had heard or seen work.

I share this with more than a little embarrassment, and lots of guilt. But also with the knowledge that I didn’t know how or where to find the education and evidence to give good quality breastfeeding support.

Although things have improved over the last 20 years in healthcare, there is still a lack of funding or prioritisation of lactation and infant feeding in the NHS and in many other healthcare systems across the world.

Breastfeeding is the biological norm, but it can present unique challenges for many mothers and families. As professionals, it is our responsibility to be well-versed in the intricacies of breastfeeding, enabling us to offer evidence-based advice and practical solutions. By investing in comprehensive breastfeeding training, we can better support mothers on their breastfeeding journeys, ultimately promoting the health and well-being of infants and their families.

Importance of Breastfeeding Training for Health Professionals

Breastfeeding is not merely a personal choice but a public health imperative. The benefits of breastfeeding are well-documented, ranging from improved infant nutrition and immunity to reduced risks of chronic diseases later in life. However, despite these advantages, breastfeeding rates remain suboptimal in almost all parts of the world,  due to a lack of adequate support and guidance from healthcare professionals and the over-promotion of infant formulas.

Comprehensive breastfeeding training equips us with the knowledge and skills to:

  1. Provide accurate and consistent information to mothers
  2. Identify and address common breastfeeding challenges
  3. Promote and support exclusive breastfeeding practices
  4. Understand the unique needs of diverse populations
  5. Advocate for breastfeeding-friendly policies and environments

By prioritising breastfeeding training, we can become effective advocates and champions for breastfeeding, ultimately contributing to improved maternal and child health outcomes.

Key Components of Effective Breastfeeding Training - and what makes ours stand out

An effective breastfeeding training program should encompass a range of essential components to ensure a comprehensive understanding of the subject. These components include:

  1. Personal Debrief and communication & listening skills: Good lactation support starts with self-awareness of one’s own beliefs and biases. Only then can we truly facilitate a space where mothers and families can navigate their way through their infant feeding struggles.
  2. Anatomy and Physiology: Understanding the anatomical structures involved in breastfeeding and the physiological processes that regulate milk production and transfer.
  3. Breastfeeding Techniques: Mastering proper positioning, latch techniques, and strategies for addressing common challenges such as sore nipples, engorgement, and low milk supply.
  4. Psychosocial Support: Recognising the emotional and psychological aspects of breastfeeding, including strategies for providing emotional support and addressing barriers to breastfeeding.
  5. Cultural understanding: Understanding the societal and cultural history of infant feeding as well as understanding the cultural differences in breastfeeding practices, beliefs, and traditions to provide culturally appropriate care.
  6. Legal and Ethical Considerations: Familiarising professionals with relevant laws, policies, and ethical guidelines related to breastfeeding support and promotion.

By incorporating these key components, breastfeeding training programs like ours, equip professionals with a comprehensive skillset to effectively support and empower breastfeeding mothers.

Understanding the Challenges in Breastfeeding for Professionals

While breastfeeding is a natural process, it can present unique challenges for both mothers and healthcare professionals. As professionals, it is crucial to understand and address these challenges proactively:

  1. Lack of Confidence and Support: Many new mothers struggle with confidence and may lack adequate support systems, leading to early breastfeeding cessation.
  2. Workplace and Social Barriers: Societal norms, lack of breastfeeding-friendly policies, and workplace environments can hinder breastfeeding success.
  3. Birth and medical experiences: an over-medicalised birth as well as other healthcare factors can impact milk production, infant behaviours and milk transfer,  which requires education,  guidance and support.
  4. Misinformation and Myths: Widespread misinformation and persistent myths surrounding breastfeeding can undermine mothers' efforts and create unnecessary obstacles.

By acknowledging and addressing these challenges head-on, healthcare professionals can better support mothers in overcoming barriers and achieving their breastfeeding goals.
